3DART :- Airmail Delivery SWAK

The days of snail mail.  Receiving letters was such a joy. The long awaited news and information from home was always appreciated when in the battle field. Can’t count the number of times where fellow soldiers received no mail and I would share goodies with them.  Thus making some lifelong friends that I still communicate with today. Marine Corps OohRAh!  My mom would send sugar and koolaid. Drink Warm no problemo.  🙂

During WWII she had baked my Uncle Louie a cake. And, in the forty’s you had no custom ready-made frosting in a can. Things were made from scratch.   So, this frosting made by a than 14 year old girl was the hard boiled kind that would be slightly hardened on the cake.  This cake was packaged up and shipped to my uncle where some 6 months after landing at Normandy the cake had arrived.  Meanwhile this frosting my mom made turned into concrete! 🙂 It was so hard he had to use his bayonet to open the cake.  To his surprise the cake was like it was freshly baked due to the frosting preserving the inside. The inside of that precious frosted cake was heaven for this soldier who survived D-DAY and able to return home to his family.  Not saying that this cake helped win the war, but it did help save the life of my uncle.
