Mental Hospitals Are For

The Empress has no clothes and one more time, she does not fit.
What to do now? I’m out in the open with all these pretty people staring at me.

I know what they think, they think I’m drunk and drugged, which makes me feel about ten feet tall and confident, especially since the only drug I’m on is hope.

Go ask Alice!

I tell myself that I’m out here for another hour or two, just so I’m not missed.
I even talk to myself, the boisterous old crackpot that I am.

It’s better for you to learn these things before you have to see the worse.

Becoming Visible And Vulnerable

It’s 0K to be visible and vulnerable isn’t it? Many things can make me feel like I’m in a real live mental hospital. What are your options?

It’s one thing to be invisible and vulnerable. But now we can turn those into an indicator of power. Now we’ve reached that tipping point and the mere mention of the hashtag #MeToo is rippling.

I think more women and men are deciding to share their stories of sexual assault and sexual harassment with greater power and confidence. But more power comes with more responsibility.

Now, just as in the so-called “Golden Age” of Hollywood, women will walk out of projects they’ve been working on because they can’t be comfortable being an object of focus, or because a man has broken the basic rules of consent.

That’s why it’s vital that we take our stories seriously. We must prioritize the safety and well-being of people who’ve experienced sexual assault and harassment in our words and actions.

Marginalized People

That includes marginalized women, immigrants, people of color, LGBTQ people, disabled people and anyone else who is already feeling vulnerable and insecure.
Of course, the idea that anyone is getting attacked, abused or otherwise victimized isn’t to say that men can’t be victims too. In the end, it’s important to not put people in pigeon holes when it comes to their experiences. Hell it seems that we’re all marginalized.

I can’t help but be troubled by the fact that women are the ones standing up for themselves, while men are the ones holding each other accountable.

Because I know firsthand that’s how things work for a lot of men. I know that most of the male heroes we’re used to reading about in stories never call each other out on their shit. They let women go on and on about their abuses, then go on with their lives, not bothering to challenge those claims in any meaningful way.

Making And Taking Big Steps

The #MeToo movement is a big step forward, in terms of bringing these issues into the light, and challenging what’s been “normalized.” But that doesn’t mean all women will suddenly find themselves in a place where the men in their lives behave like grown ups, or try to become aware of the way their gender is still shaping their behavior.

When you have women taking on the responsibility of holding you accountable, it’s only a matter of time before you’re called out.
Just as women aren’t special snowflakes, men aren’t infallible snowmen either. They’re not entitled to just the things they want from each other. When one man violates another’s boundaries, he too has to be accountable.

But there are a lot of men out there who really do want to stand up for women. And they should. And their voices can be an important part of this movement if they get involved with their words and actions.

Real Men

But for too long, men have just been allowed to think that being a “man” means never having to talk about how men behave, and never having to think about why we can’t just talk openly about things that matter.
Women are standing on the frontline here, and they deserve to be heard and respected for it.

We’ve earned our place at the table and we’re doing our best to use the force of our voices to reshape the narrative.

But if the conversation is going to change for the better, we can’t leave out men and leave them in charge. Now that we know it’s okay to talk about sexual assault and harassment, it’s time for everyone to acknowledge how this issue affects them too.

“It would be great if we could all just get along. Unfortunately, most people, especially the politicians who are ruining our country, want us to go in opposite directions and start a deadly”

Thanks for reading. I get random ideas and thoughts that I try and convey. At times they don’t make sense to anyone but me. So, even after I post, I wonder if I’ve written enough randomness.

I’m thinking I should delay this post because. Just because.
